STOP PRESS! OCEAN'S MINSTREL WINS LISTED (CLASS 1) 1M INTERNATIONAL TRIAL STAKES AT LINGFIELD ON 4TH APRIL 2009

In only his fourth season training, John has picked up his first Listed race with OCEAN'S MINSTREL, pictured above winning the Lingfield race. The Pivotal colt, ridden by Jerry O'Dwyer, led from the start to win by an impressive 2 1/4 lengths from 7/2 favourite Deposer. Jerry upped the tempo and went clear from 2 furlongs out with a winning time of 1m 36.04secs, which is 0.66 faster than the standard. This is a huge boost for the Newmarket yard, especially as the horse has an entry in the 2000 Guineas. It looks as if 2009 is going to be a memorable year for the Ryan team!

ABOUT JOHN RYAN:

Son of successful trainer, Mick Ryan, John started his third year training from October 1st 2007 since taking over the reins at Cadland House Stables, and has now moved virtually next door to Sackville House Stables. He began his racing career in the eighties as Pupil/Assistant to his father and riding as an amateur jockey on the Flat, followed by a stint as Assistant Trainer to Philip Mitchell in Epsom whilst also riding winners in amateur races all over Europe. John then served his apprenticeship with Mick and moved on to become a conditional jockey for Stan Mellor and progressed to riding as a professional jump jockey, accumulating 174 winners for many top trainers. From 1999 to 2002, John returned to Newmarket as Assistant Trainer to his father and spent a further 2 years as Assistant to J.C.Poulton before taking out a dual licence to train after Mick’s retirement. All in all, a perfect schooling for his training career!

HISTORY

John’s grandfather, Mick, was stud groom for Lord Derby at Woodland Stud, Newmarket for 32 years and then became stud groom for Lord Howard De Walden at Plantation Stud and trained from there with great success until his death. Mick himself has been in racing since the age of 12 and was apprenticed to the great George Colling at Stanley House Stud, followed by 4 years as a work rider in America and Assistant Trainer positions for Elizabeth Arden and A.J.Bodero. His return to England in 1964 saw him working for Bernard Van Cutsem as travelling head lad and then Assistant Trainer and finally in 1976 becoming a trainer himself at Hurworth House Stables. Immediate success prompted a move to Cadland House, where his illustrious career included winners at most English tracks, plus lucrative forays to Belgium and Holland to win all the Dutch Classics at least once! In 1983, Mick took six horses to America, winning with two of them and being placed with the others. He is probably best remembered for the shrewd training and placing of the great KATIES who won the Irish 1000guineas and the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. Despite retiring, Mick is still very much available to help John should he require it!
